6 unique ideas for classroom management

Every teacher knows that one of the first things you have to do with a class is instilling some kind of behavior management system.

For older children, this is usually in the form of demerits or detention for speaking in class or being disruptive. In the worst cases, they may even be sent to the principal’s office.

For younger children, teachers can have a bit more creativity. They can use a points system, colors, or something fun like brag tags.

Every teacher has their own system, but if you’re looking for a fun and unique way to make sure your classroom is staying behaved, this article has some ideas down below for you.

The Incentive Option

At the beginning of class, write the letters V-I-D-E-O at the top of the whiteboard. Every time your class misbehaves, erase a letter. If there are no letters left, then they don’t get to watch a fun video at the end of the day or week.

For this, it’s important to show a fun video at the beginning of the year to show them what you would like to reward them with and to see what they might be missing.

Responsibility

Little kids enjoy feeling important or being responsible. One way you can encourage classroom behavior is by rewarding a student and letting them be your assistant for the week or day.

They can hold the bathroom passes or be the one to collect everyone’s homework. If you have an errand for them to run, make sure you use your special helper.

Create a Class Chant

Everyone knows the “1..2…3…eyes on me!” or when the teacher raises their hand, everyone is supposed to be quiet.

Make a unique class chant for your class. It can be something funny, instructive, or whatever you want. The sky is really the limit here, but the idea is for you to say something, and they repeat it. Once they repeat your chant, then it’s time to be quiet.

Celebrate Positive Behavior

Studies have shown that reinforcing positive behavior can go a lot further than disciplining students for negative behavior. Even though it may be hard to hold back when a student decides to start throwing their pencils around the classroom, you always have to look on the bright side.

That’s where you can use something like brag tags, which is an organized system meant to reinforce and encourage children for their positive behavior. You’ll be giving more thumbs up than thumbs down.

A Compliment System

Who doesn’t like receiving compliments? What you can do is set up a box at the front of the room and encourage students to leave compliments about other students when they see them doing something nice.

If a student helps another student with their bags, they can write a small compliment and put it in the box to be read aloud at the end of the week. It’s similar to the idea of celebrating positive behavior and can go a long way for students.

Classroom Dismissal

No doubt, you have seen the YouTube videos of students and teachers who have their own special handshakes or dismissal system. This works better with smaller children, but having that to look forward to at the end of the day is always a treat.

If children are acting up, warn them that they may not get to do their special dismissal that day or the rest of the week.
